Student Essays

On the morning of November 5, 2004, I visited Chenery Middle School near Boston. After meeting with a group of very well-prepared students, answering their questions, and hearing a few of them play their instruments, it occurred to me that it would be nice to find out their opinions and perspectives on music. I talked to their teacher, and we worked out an essay assignment, concentrating on several different aspects of music, and what role it does and will play in the students' lives (from a realistic point of view). Ultimately, the focus of each student's essay was up to the writer. The teacher picked the best ten, from which I was then going to choose several to post on my site. However, I'm posting all ten because I couldn't imagine leaving any out of the mix – they're all really good! I've altered the students' names, for reasons of privacy. Their ages, however, are accurate.

Music in My Life by Abigail, age 12

Music: A Universal Language by Ali, age 13

Essay by Angela, age 11

My Musical Memories by Caroline, age 13

A Link Between Nations by Conrad, age 13

Music (poem) by Dominique, age 13

Essay by Eliza, age 12

Essay by Juliette, age 13

Essay by Mingchi, age 13

Essay by Rangi, age 13
